A constant retarding force of 50 N is applied to a body of mass 20 kg moving initially with a speed of 15 m s-1. How long does the body take to stop?

##### Solution :-

Here,

Force = – 50 N (since it is a retarding force)

Mass m = 20 kg

v = 0

u = 15 m s-1

Force F = ma

a =$$\dfrac{F}{m}$$$$\dfrac{-50}{20}$$ = – 2.5 ms-2

Using the equation, v = u + at

0 = 15 + (- 2.5) t

t = 6 s

You may have seen in a circus a motorcyclist driving in vertical loops inside a ‘death well’ (a hollow spherical chamber with holes, so the spectators can watch from outside).
